About the Opportunity

MANT is seeking a Santali Translator to support a forthcoming Radio Exchange Programme with Nityananda Janavani Community Radio.

As part of the programme, the visiting radio professionals will spend time with communities in Purulia, listen to local experiences and learn about the role of community radio in connecting people, information and local voices.

The Santali Translator will initially work as an important communication link between Santali-speaking community members and the visiting radio professionals. The role will also involve regular communication with Bengali-speaking colleagues.

Over time, the selected candidate will help the visiting radio professionals develop a basic understanding of Santali and Bengali, enabling more direct communication and deeper engagement with local communities.

What Will You Do?

You will:

• Facilitate communication between Santali-speaking community members and the visiting radio professionals.
• Support communication and coordination with your Bengali-speaking colleagues.
• Help interpret conversations, local experiences, stories and community perspectives.
• Gradually support the visiting radio professionals to learn to speak, read and write basic Santali and Bengali.
• Contribute to communication and radio-based work around issues affecting communities, including health, climate, women’s issues and other local concerns.
• Help bring the voices, experiences and concerns of people from the region to a wider audience.

Who Can Apply?

We are looking for someone who:

• Has Santali as their mother tongue and can speak and write the language fluently.
• Can communicate and write reasonably well in English and Hindi.
• Has completed Post Graduation or is a Research Scholar.
• Is interested in language, communication, community engagement, community media, and learning.
• Loves interacting with people from different backgrounds.
• Is interested in using their knowledge of the local language and community to support meaningful communication.

Knowledge of Bengali will be useful for working with local colleagues and communities.

Location

Remuneration and other terms

• Stipend: ₹20,000 per month
• Local Travel reimbursement 
• Preferably own bike for local mobility
